Program Committee Update—Jim / Linda-Committee had a good discussion about pinning down when they wanted certain meals and events to occur--would like Sunday dinner at hotel, Monday evening on your own, Tuesday offsite event that would include dinner. Next meeting is January 20th (in Indianapolis) to schedule sessions, etc. Committee reviewed 2010 conference evaluations. Overall feedback from attendees about conference was positive. Talked about guest speakers; Judge Wade McCree is the only confirmed speaker thus far. Hot topics for possible sessions include SAP, verification changes, gainful employment, and net price calculator. The Eastern Michigan Financial Aid Office has agreed to do a skit on generation gaps at one of the meals. 2. Student Success Story—Lori Vedder-Started looking for students coming out of the foster care system; Lori currently soliciting student success stories and will then select the student; Lori shared that Mark Delorey from Western Michigan University who works with foster care students has suggested that we have one there to highlight but to have other students present to share their stories as well. Lori asked if we could do this. Consensus was that we stay with one student due to history of the award and expense of having additional students there and not wanting to dilute the significance of the award itself. JoAnn Ross said that if we decided to invite additional students we would need board approval. 3. Committee and Sub-committee chair updates a. Guest Services: Anne Watson and Alicia Keaton-Looked at Amtrak information as a possibility to advertise travel to Grand Rapids (as recruiting tool); not sure how useful this information would be since driving time is much less than train time from most cities …although the Amtrak fare is lower than airfare in most cases. If traveling from Chicago and other cities it may be an option but for some cities the travel time is much longer on Amtrak then traveling by car. Also, there is a $14 parking charge for those parking at the Amway Grand Hotel. Anne will send Amtrak information to Michiale and Angelene to look over-they will then send info to Stephanie to use in a tickler. b. Logistics & Publicity Chair: Stefanie Channell-Email ticklers went out in both December and January-she will send another one at the end of February or beginning of March. She is also working on newsletter article. c. Registration: Val Kepner and Betsi Werling-No update d. Sunday Entertainment: Angelene Patton-Will likely be having a Game Night with football theme. As it was done a few years ago with much success. Will need local committee members to bring games for the event. e. Tuesday Night: Michiale Schneider-Decided on Meijer Gardens; sent information to Kathy Purvis to make sure it is something she would like to do; looking at transportation options (buses that would run every 15 minutes, etc); price includes meal, admission to gardens, dance floor, meal, etc and is very comparable with what’s been spent in previous years. Wanted to showcase something unique to Grand Rapids that everyone will enjoy. f. Vendor Relations: Jay Rhodes-No update g. VIP Baskets: Vickie Crupper-Focus on made in Michigan products for the baskets-Arbor Springs water, chocolate covered cherries from Traverse City, etc. May create wrappers to go around certain item. Dept of Ed basket needs to be kept under $25; Angelene suggested the Michigan store if additional ideas are needed for items. h. Charity: Jo Cassar and Stephanie Petsch-contacted Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital again-they will be willing to attend the conference so leaning toward having them as the charity; currently looking at ideas of items to use to fund charity; will follow up to see if the extra water bottles are promised to anyone-if not will consider possibility of selling them again. i. Decorations: Diann Cosme-will follow-up with Michiale and Angelene on decoration ideas; want to make sure all 9 states are represented. Angelene will send them budget amount for decorations soon. 4. MASFAA Board meeting: January 21, 2011 – Angelene-January 20th is program meeting; Angelene asked if there are any additional updates between now and then to send them to Angelene and Michiale so they can add to their report to MASFAA board. 5. March meeting for co-chairs –Michiale – Angelene and Michiale will meet at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel on March 8th at noon; invited Jim and Linda to join them; if others are interested in attending they are welcome. Michiale requested that those who feel a need to attend to please reach out to Angelene or Michiale so they can be included in the information as the meeting gets closer. 6. Wrap Up – Angelene – decided to go with light vests for committee members to wear at conference. More information forthcoming soon… Submitted by Ann Marie Gruber, Lakeland Community College NEXT MEETING: MEETING ADJOURNED: SUBMITTED BY: Ann Marie Gruber, Lakeland Community College (OH) POSTED BY: Michiale M Schneider |
