President's Welcome

Welcome to the 2008 MASFAA Conference website!

The Conference Program Committee and the Conference Local Arrangements Committee are working hard to make the 2008 MASFAA Conference the best conference ever. Cincinnati, known as the Queen City, was also the home of the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. Our conference theme, MASFAA Aboveground: Overcoming Ignorance through Education, has guided both committees in terms of program content and activities.

MASFAA is proud to acknowledge the outstanding aid professionals throughout our Midwest Region by providing you with opportunities to learn, grow, share, and have fun with your colleagues. The interest sessions will bring you timely information about Reauthorization and the TEACH Grant, as well as provide a variety of professional tracks to assist you in your day job.

The conference hotel is the beautiful historic Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza. The conference site is the fabulous Duke Energy Center, just a short walk from the Netherland Plaza. You will have plenty of time to meet friends, attend general and breakout sessions, and visit the exhibitor area in this new and incredibly spacious facility.

I want to tell you about two of our presenters. Dr. Phillip Day, President of NASFAA, will join us for the conference and talk about the exciting new plans he and the NASFAA Board are developing. He is looking forward to our Midwest hospitality and getting to know first-hand why MASFAA is such an active and dynamic regional association. The always popular Jeff Baker has promised to tell us everything we ever wanted to know about the TEACH Grant and also a couple of other federal update topics that we have come to love so well.

On Tuesday night we will meet at the famous Cincinnati Freedom Center to celebrate our goal of continuing to help students overcome ignorance through education by providing financial counseling, guidance, access and hope. The Freedom Center epitomizes the hope and help that was shown all those who fled from tyranny and oppression during the Civil War. MASFAA Aboveground epitomizes the hope and help that we must continue to offer to those who wish to escape from the tyranny and oppression of economic and social deprivation.

Finally, we are planning a gigantic anniversary/birthday bash for the five states who are celebrating milestone anniversaries or birthdays. Be sure to get a piece of cake from Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Ohio and Iowa!

I'm looking forward to seeing you in Cincinnati!

Best,
Diane Lambart Fleming
2007-2008 MASFAA President
