Annual Conference

The Indiana State Financial Aid Association hosted the 42nd annual MASFAA conference in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 24 - 26, 2004. We were pleased with the attendance figures: 659 registered and 130 first time attendees. The conference sessions were excellent and attendees were very pleased with the variety and quality of the sessions. Diane Fleming of Central Michigan University and Marvin Smith of Purdue University were program co-chairs and Vicki Goeke of Indiana Business College chaired the local arrangements. My thanks to all those who planned the program and worked on local arrangements.

Featured speakers included:

  • Sandy Baum, Art Hauptman, and Thomas Mortenson discussed higher education access in crisis.
  • Tom Hallman, reporter, author, and Pulitzer Prize recipient was our keynote speaker.
  • Jeff Baker and Kay Jacks provided a Department of Education update.
  • Dr. Lonise Bias provided a motivational talk.
  • Dr. Brian Fitzgerald gave an update on the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance.
  • Dallas Martin gave a Washington update at the closing session.

We were pleased that Jim White, WASFAA President, and George Chin, NASFAA Chair, was able to join us.


Orlo Austin, recently retired, received the
NASFAA Leadership Award.

Ken Fridsma of Grand Valley State
University was honored with the Alan
Purdy Distinguished Service Award.

Rick Shipman of Michigan State University
received the President’s Award.

Kay Jacks of the Department of Education
received the Meritorious Service Award.

The Outstanding New Professional Award went to Val Kepner of Oberlin College.
Val was unable to attend and received her award at the OASFAA conference.
