    • This week, the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate are in session for legislative business. Both chambers are expected to consider and pass legislation to raise the nation’s debt ceiling.
    • On Tuesday and Wednesday, all-day, the Federal Reserve holds a two-day meeting of its Federal Open Market Committee to review the nation’s monetary policy. The minutes for each regularly scheduled meeting of the committee, which include a description of economic and financial conditions, are made available three weeks after its policy decisions are posted in the Federal Reserve Board’s Annual Report.
    • On Tuesday at 2:00 p.m., NCHER holds its Monthly Membership Call, which will provide a summary of the December 2, 2021 meeting of the NCHER Board of Directors; a summary and updates on major items being worked on by our committees, caucuses, and working groups; an update on federal and state efforts to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, including any operational issues impacting the FFELP, Direct Loan, and private loan industry and their borrowers; and a Washington Update, including recent legislative and regulatory actions by Congress, the White House, the Department of Education, the Department of Treasury, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and the Federal Communications Commission. ​Note: The Zoom link has been circulated to each organization’s primary point of contact.
    • On Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) hosts a webinar titled, “Preparing Borrowers to Restart Student Loan Payments.” According to the invite, after January 31, 2022, more than 35 million federal student loan borrowers will have to restart repayment on their federal loans. FSA is committed to helping every borrower successfully return to repayment. Join FSA as it discusses information and tools to help student loan borrowers prepare for the end of the payment pause. Participants will also learn more about repayment plans, recent changes to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, and how to help borrowers avoid student loan scams.     • On Wednesday at 3:00 p.m., Third Way hosts an event titled, “The State of Higher Education with Chairman Bobby Scott.” According to the invite, 2021 has proven to be a year of both continued challenges and new opportunity for our nation’s higher education system. The 117th Congress has taken major steps to lessen COVID-19’s blow on institutions, students, and their families through historic investments, including the American Rescue Plan and the forthcoming Build Back Better Act that would address the college completion crisis and make higher ed more accessible and affordable for every American. Join Third Way to hear House Education and Labor Committee Chairman Bobby Scott (D-VA) address the current state of our higher education system and the impact these unprecedented investments will have on students and families across the country.
