Senate HELP Committee Releases Updated Language on Build Back Better Act

Over the weekend, Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-WA) released the updated legislative text of the Build Back Better Act, the social spending package that Congressional Democrats are looking to pass through the budget reconciliation process. The language on key education provisions is mostly unchanged from the House-passed version, which includes a $550 increase in the maximum award for Pell Grants and a new College Retention and Completion Grant program, with some updates to reflect policy and technical changes to comply with the chamber’s budget rules. The text released by the Senate Committee will be presented to the Parliamentarian later this week to determine their compliance with the budget rules. “The HELP Committee’s title of Build Back Better is updated and ready to go ahead of bipartisan conversations with the Parliamentarian over the next few days,” said Chairwoman Murray. “This bill will dramatically lower families’ costs for things like childcare, health care, and education, train workers for good-paying, union jobs, and take needed action against climate change, and it’s fully paid for by ensuring the very wealthiest in our country finally pay their fair share. I look forward to getting Build Back Better over the finish line.”
